Doing Beauty Justice

I’ve always wanted to be a better photographer and I’m finally spending some time figuring out how to probably use my Canon 450D DSLR… In the meantime I wanted to share a photo I took the past weekend; hoping that I can do some kind of justice to the immense beauty of the new love in my life.

Hey Adii, very cool pic. Good composition… I like the way your ladylove is leaning into the centre of the frame… and, although she is mostly in profile, you’ve managed to get more than just a hint of the all-important “eyelights”. Of course it helps that she has a gorgeous smile :) I recently got a 50D and am trying to do justice to its cleverness… total fun! Best, Fred

I’m so looking for an excuse to upgrade to one of the newer, better Canon models, but I seriously need to figure out how to optimally use the 450D first…. :)

She’s lovely and the photo is nice too. Things to watch out for are objects behind the subject, like the window here. We tend not to see them when looking through the view finder but they can ruin the image. Luckily in this case the depth of field is shallow enough to blur the window enough that it isn’t a real problem. But a slight move to your left would have hidden it completely, making the photo that little bit better.

Wow, interesting point there. Will try it next time; thanks for the advice! :)

No need to move, just try a F/2 or something like that and you will have a great blur behind the portrait…

Personally I just got a D200 Nikon replacing my dead D70 and it changed everything because on a pro model there are no more programs. You need to know your basics like shutter, White balance, etc… And I am learning that right now and I can tell you that I change completely your way to do photography. You don’t take pictures anymore, you make photography.

Other thing I realized is really important is a good objective. I got a great 1:2.8 17-55mm from Nikkor that costs more than the camera itself. So if you want to improve your skills, don’t try to get a new camera. Just get a great objective and that will make the difference ! ;-)

        btw nice picture !! ;-)

They are, indeed – but not in the screenshot I linked to in my previous comment. It all looks good when using Firefox + Mac, though.
