Great article by Spencer Fry on his roles & responsibilities at Carbonmade, with him being the non-designer or -programmer. I obviously find this article doubley great, since I’m within much of the same role over at WooThemes and can thus relate with what Spencer has said.
I’d also like to add though, that since taking on this role at WooThemes, my work has just continued to increase month-on-month; it’s really a case of opening Pandora’s box and as soon as you do, there are just more and more strategic or admin-related things that requires your attention. Obviously though, most startups tend not to take care of these – especially initially – but that doens’t make this any more of a valid & important task.
In fact – I’d venture as far as saying that you’re going to be hard-pushed to grow your business without paying proper attention to these things. It’s definitely not just about designing, developing or using social media.
Completely off topic, but I like the new look. Very nice.
Totally of topic yes, but thanks anyway!
I like it too !
Coming back to the subject, I really do agree with you. A lot of people think that because they have the tech skills they are going to succeed and that strategy and marketing are just bullshit. They are wrong. I think that the big difference between Woothemes and the “competition” is that you make an amazing job to promote your business. I can see from the beginning the different turns in your strategy and I can also see you constantly try to stay on top and to find the best ideas to make to business as good as possible. And I am not sure that everyone realize how it takes so much energy…
That is a bit like people going freelancing. Sometimes some go back to a company job because they did not have the skills to sell their business…
I think it is really really important and i am really sure that the success of WooThemes is due to the energy you did put on having the best strategy at the best moment… WooThemes is for me really interesting for the themes themselves of course but also to see how a guy, or a team, can make a great business and strategy around WordPress themes… I really take notes and learn from it !!
Wow, thanks for the kind words Francis!
Those mean a helluva lot to us and we can only commit to continue bringing the awesomeness in the future.
I really mean it and sometimes it is really funny to see people trolling your words just because of jealousy, just because they know they would not be able to do what you do…
I am planning myself to do a project around WordPress and Themes, and I can tell you that WooThemes is a good example for me in terms of marketing and strategy.
